The Karnataka Legislative Council voted on Friday, December 10.

The vote counting for the 25-seat election of the Karnataka Legislative Council will begin on Tuesday, December 14. In the elections held on December 10, the ruling People’s Party needed to win 13 seats to obtain a majority in parliament. The party won seven seats in the last poll. The opposition Congress and JD(S) are also looking forward to the results and hope that BJP will not get a majority.

If the ruling People’s Party manages to gain a majority, it is expected to help the prospects of the party’s chief minister, Bassawala Bomai. If the JD(S) proposed by the National People’s Party Coalition is rejected, if the People’s Party gains power, it will lose the chairmanship of the upper house. Currently, JD(S) MLC Basavaraj Horatti is the chairman of the board of directors. The state’s ruling People’s Party and Congress have sent candidates in 20 electoral districts, while JD(S) is running in six electoral districts and AAP is running in three electoral districts.

Although the People's Party and the National Assembly fought a direct struggle in 13 electoral districts, the stage is ready for an 8-seat triangle struggle. Strong independent candidates are competing in the Belagavi and Dharwad electoral districts. The result of the election is seen by many as a harbinger of the 2023 state legislative elections.

Of the 90 candidates who tried their luck, 89 were men, and the only female contender was Gayathri Shanthe Gowda of Congress. The voter turnout rate exceeded 99%. Although the former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced that the BJP will win at least 15 seats, Siddaramaiah, the opposition leader of the state assembly, claimed that the BJP will fail because the people are bored with its policies. JD(S) rejected BJP's alliance proposal and expressed confidence in winning all six seats it is competing for.
